On Monday, San Diego junior Josh Romanski pitched a no hitter against Harvard in a 12-0 San Diego win at Cunningham Stadium. The lefthander faced 28 hitters, retiring the first 13 he faced until a hit batsman ended the streak and ruined the perfect game. Romanski struck out a season high eight batters and walked none. In the seventh, shortstop Sean Nicol provided defensive help for Romanski, making a diving stop in the hole and firing to first to beat the runner by a step. In the bottom of the inning, Romanski hit a home run to give the Toreros the 12-0 lead.
This was USD’s first no hitter in 12 years, as the Torero’s winning streak is now at 10 games. Romanski improves to 4-0 with a 4.37 ERA on the season.
Coming into Monday with a 5.88 ERA, USD pitching coach Eric Valenzuela had this to say about his lefty after the game: “His velocity had been down, we thought that it was more of a conditioning thing, because he was playing center field and pitching, but we made an adjustment with his windup… He was kind of pausing at his balance point instead of being all fluid in one motion. He was pausing and then starting again. So Thursday in his bullpen, we had him go all the way through and not pause at that balance point, and he gained an easy four miles an hour, easily. Once we figured that out, all his pitches were working.
