There are many exciting matchups going on this weekend, as SEC conference play begins. The marquee matchup will be South Carolina at Vanderbilt. Although Justin Smoak and James Darnell are the notable mashers on the team, its shortstop Reese Havens who is off to the best start, hitting .411/.514/.679 with four homers and 22 RBIs. Left hander Mike Minor is handling Friday night duties well after replacing All American David Price. Minor is 2-1, 1.66 with 21 strikeouts and six walks in 22 innings.
Another top rivalry when the USC Trojans play three games against Long Beach State. Shane Peterson and Danny Espinosa look to continue their dirtbag style of baseball against Robert Stock and Grant Green.
Georgia Tech will play in Tallahassee, as the Florida State Seminoles look to continue their hot start. Cal State Fullerton against Arizona should be fun to watch, as Preston Guilmet pitches against two of the top freshman in the country, Fullerton’s Gary Brown and Christian Colon.
Before Virginia Tech plays host to the Yankees next Tuesday, they will have to face a strong North Carolina team, led by Dustin Ackley. Sophomore pitcher Alex White moves into the closer spot this weekend, as UNC closer Rob Wooten is out with an injury.
Miami brings their star studded lineup to North Carolina State and in state rivals Mississippi and Ole Miss match up this weekend as well.
