This Weekend's Slate


The San Diego State Tournament features a number of top teams from the west coast, such as San Diego, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Loyola Maramount, San Diego State, and Santa Clara. Fans get to see such stars as Brian Matusz, Josh Romanski (both SD), Joey Wong, Greg Peavey, and Garrett Nash (OSU). Oklahoma State has one of the top two way players in the country, as Jordy Mercer doubles as shortstop and closer for the Cowboys. San Diego State’s Steven Strasburg is a projected top pick for the 2009 draft.

The Rice Classic in Houston hosts Rice, Creighton, Michigan State, and Western Carolina. The Wataburger Classic in Corpus Christi features top ranked Arizona, as well as Notre Dame, South Alabama, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

The Virginia Cavaliers take their perfect 10-0 record to North Carolina State in ACC play.Baseball America named Friday’s matchup of Jacob Thompson vs. Eric Surkamp as their Marquee Matchup of the weekend. Thompson has been great in his first few starts, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He’s struck out 16 through 12 innings, allowing just five walks. Surkamp is 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA, striking out 12 in 10 innings.

Miami hosts Boston College, and a struggling UCLA lineup looks to regain its form against St. Mary’s this weekend. UC Irvine faces off against Tulane.
