Peterson and Espinosa Combine for 7 hits in Win


The Long Beach State Dirtbags continue their exciting style of play with a 3-2 win over Wichita State Friday. Shane Peterson had 3 hits, including the game winning rbi double over the center fielder’s head in the 12th. Danny Espinosa is showing everyone he deserves to be in the discussion of the great Long Beach Shortstops such as Bobby Crosby, Troy Tulowitzki, and Evan Longoria. The leader of the team had 4 hits, and is now hitting a cool .600 through the team’s first 5 games. Cape Cod MVP and batting champion Conor Gillaspie went 2-5 in the loss.

In Coral Gables, Eric Erickson carried a perfect game into the sixth against in state rival Florida Gators. He struck out 9 in 6 2/3 innings in the 8-4 win. Jemile Weeks homered and Ryan Jackson went 1-3 with a double, continuing to show his emerging strength at the plate. Speedy centerfielder Blake Tekotte went 3-4 at the plate. Yonder Alonso went 2-3 with a run batted in.

At the Urban Invitational, UCLA shut down Southern 11-2. Alden Carrithers went 3-4 and shortstop Brandon Crawford finished 1-3 with 2 rbi, one on a fielder’s choice and another on a sac fly. Catcher Brent Dean went 2-3 with a homer. Saturday’s game against Bethune-Cookman will be televised on ESPN2 at 8 pm ET/5 pm pacific.
