Notes from Friday

In Rock Hill, SC, sophomore righty Alex White did not allow and earned run in six innings in a Tarheel 8-1 win over Kent State. He struck out six and walked one to improve to 2-0. Dustin Ackley went 2-3, as some scouts say he is the best college hitter they have seen in a long time. Kent State ace Chris Carpenter got roughed up, allowing seven earned runs over four innings.

In what is believed to be the largest crowd in Oregon State Beavers history (7,456), OSU defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 6-4. Jason Ogata hit a 3 run inside the park home run to give the Beavers the win. Senior pitcher Mike Stutes went 5 2/3 IP, giving up four runs while striking out eight. Glove man Joey Wong hit his first career home run in the first inning. Pre Season All American shortstop Gordon Beckham went 3-5 in the loss, hitting a laser down the right field line to start off the fourth.

At the Houston College Classic, pitcher Ryan Berry picked up the win for the Owls in a 7-2 victory over Oklahoma. Freshman center fielder Chad Mozingo continued his hot hitting, going 3-4 with a double and three runs scored. In Pepperdine’s 4-2 win over Tulane at the Minnesota Dairy Queen Classic, Brett Hunter received the no decision, going seven strong innings. He allowed only two runs on four hits, two walks, and seven K’s.

In Oxford, Lance Lynn picked up his 2nd win of the season in a game filled with fog, going 7.0 innings. He allowed four runs, two of which were earned, and struck out nine.
