On Friday, UCLA lefty Tim Murphy shut down visiting St. Mary’s in a 14-0 blowout. The junior pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out a season high eleven. He runs his consecutive scoreless innings to 19.1 in the Bruins first one hitter since 2000. Gabe Cohen once again provided a big offensive burst behind Murphy, going 2-4 with six RBI. Senior second baseman Alden Carrithers continued his hot hitting, going 4-5 with 3 runs scored. Shortstop Brandon Crawford doubled to right in the eighth inning, plating two.
In Georgia Tech’s ACC opener, shortstop Derek Dietrich blasted two home runs, finishing with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. The freshman has homered in three straight games.
Brian Matusz defeated Oklahoma State 8-2 in San Diego yesterday. The Pre Season All American Matusz struck out 12 in 8 innings to pick up the win. He allowed one unearned run on four hits.
Georgia’s Trevor Holder carried a no hitter into the seventh inning as the Bulldogs defeated Memphis in Athens. He allowed one run on two hits. Sophomore second baseman Michael Demperio went 4-5. Pre Season All American shortstop Gordon Beckham went 1-4, So far this season he’s hitting .486 with with 3 doubles, a triple, and 5 home runs through 8 games. He’s struck out just 3 times in 37 at bats and has stolen 2 bases.
In Honolulu, Long Beach State won another nail biter, beating the Rainbows 4-3 in 12 innings. Shane Peterson’s two out double to center allowed Ted Lemasters to score for the win. Peterson finished with 3 hits on the night.
