Friday at the San Diego Tournament

At the USD Tournament in San Diego, Josh Romanski of USD showed why he is one of the premier two way players in the country. While not having his best stuff, he battled and held Cal Poly to two runs, one of which was unearned, through six innings. Leaving with a 2-0 deficit, Romanski was a one man show, crushing a 3 run homer over the right field wall in the 8th for the 3-2 Torero win. He sat at 86-89 with his heater, and made a few nice plays off the mound.

In the next game at the tournament, Aaron Crow allowed a 2 run homer in the first inning but settled down after. He struck out 10 in 5 innings, and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits. He threw 93-96 with a nice curve.

In the game of San Diego vs. Fresno State, Tanner Scheppers and Brian Matusz did not disappoint. Although losing 5-2, Scheppers impressed scouts in attendance with his sharp command of a 95 mph fastball and a devastating slider. He struck out 9 in 6 innings. Matusz pitched well but didn’t have his best control. He still struck out 11 in 7 innings, using more of his curve/slider/changeup mix. Aaron Fitt of Baseball America interviewed Matusz, in which he said, "Today I had a hard time locating my fastball, and that was a problem for me," Matusz said. "That’s going to happen, you’re not always going to have all your pitches going, and today I wasn’t hitting the spots I was hoping to be hitting with the fastball, so I had to go to my changeup, and it was there. When I was working at the knees, it was going great, but occasionally I would leave the changeup up. Since I’ve been here at USD, I’ve always had four pitches, and whichever one’s working that day, that’s the one we use as a strikeout pitch."
